UNOPS is planting 800 trees and educating young pupils across Skopje to fight air pollution and promote greener, healthier communities.
As part of the EU for Clean Air project, UNOPS rolled out tree planting actions and environmental workshops in all Skopje municipalities, starting with Gjorche Petrov, Karposh, Kisela Voda, and Centar. The activities aim to engage pupils in learning about air pollution, environmental protection, and the impact of individual actions on the environment.
Organized together with the First Scout Unit of Skopje, the workshops bring together around 30 pupils and teachers from each local elementary school during the spring planting season. Through interactive sessions, pupils explore their environmental footprint and discover practical ways to contribute to cleaner air and a more sustainable future.
Following each workshop, pupils and teachers participate in planting plane trees in their schoolyard—a symbolic and practical step toward greening urban areas. In total, around 800 trees will be planted across Skopje by the end of April.
"This is a great way to teach children about their role in protecting the environment,” said Ana Robeva, Director of Primary School “Dimitar Pop Georgiev Berovski” in Gjorche Petrov. “They’re learning by doing—and leaving something green behind for future generations.”
The initiative strengthens environmental awareness among young people and supports the city’s long-term efforts to improve air quality and urban resilience.
