Communications and Outreach Assistant

Mission and objectives

The UN Resident Coordinator (RC) system encompasses all organizations of the United Nations system dealing with operational activities for development, regardless of their formal presence in the country. The RC system aims to bring together the different UN agencies to improve the efficiency and effectiveness of operational activities at the country level.

Context

The UN Secretary-General launched on 1 January 2019 a bold and new global reform which repositioned the UN Development System to deliver more effectively and efficiently with the achievement of the 2030 Agenda and the Sustainable Development Goals. As part of this reform, UN Resident Coordinator Offices (UN RCO), under the leadership of an empowered and independent UN Resident Coordinator - the highest-ranking official of the UN Development System and Representative of the UN Secretary-General at country level - support countries in the achievement of their development priorities and the attainment of the SDGs. This position is located in the Resident Coordinator's Office, and reports to the Resident Coordinator’s Office Team Leader.

Task description

Within the delegated authority and under the supervision of Communications and Advocacy Officer an/other RCO North Macedonia staff, the UNV Communications and Outreach Assistant will:

1. Provide support to RCO communications, advocacy and partnerships outreach activities

• Draft press releases, web articles, key messages, and other materials

• Maintain communications archive

• Support the development of and assist in the coordination of advocacy initiatives

• Support in the procurement and management of communications related vendors/consultants

2. Support the work of the UN Communications group (UNCG)

• Assist with the organization of UNCG meetings

• Support the coordination within the UNCG

• Support the development of the Sustainable Development Bulletin

3. Provide support in the management of the UN web and social media channels

• Research, design and create content for the UN North Macedonia digital platforms and publications

• Prepare social media calendar

• Update the website and social media channels, as required

• Provide support, as necessary, with UN-INFO

4. Support RCO outreach and analysis

• Support the RCO team with outreach activities, including the management of contact databases and other relevant tools that support RCO across all functional areas

• Support with information research tasks and analysis related to RCO outreach

• Support with the analysis of UN INFO data used for RCO and UN North Macedonia outreach

Languages

English, Level: Fluent, Required Macedonian, Level: Fluent, Required

Required experience

2 years of experience in the national or international level in communications, public information, social media, or other relevant programmes; experience with design is an asset, as is experience working in the UN or other international development organization; Excellent English oral and written skills; excellent drafting, formulation, reporting skills;

Albanian spoken and written language is a strong advantage. Knowledge of Romani is an advantage.

Accuracy and professionalism in document production and editing; Excellent interpersonal skills; culturally and socially sensitive; ability to work inclusively and collaboratively with a range of partners, including grassroots community members, religious and youth organizations, and authorities at different levels; familiarity with tools and approaches of communications for development; Ability to work and adapt professionally and effectively in a challenging environment; ability to work effectively in a multicultural team of international and national personnel; Solid overall computer literacy, including proficiency in various MS Office applications (Excel, Word, etc.) and email/internet; familiarity with database management; and design software. Self-motivated, ability to work with minimum supervision; ability to work with tight deadlines; Sound security awareness; Have affinity with or interest in behavior change communications and advocacy, sustainable development, and the UN System.
