The training will brought together laboratory professionals of the national and provincial public health laboratories of the Balkan countries immediately involved in and responsible for handling SARS-CoV-2 clinical or EQA samples, performing sequencing and generating the report.

About the event
The objectives of the workshop was to: (1) to provide 1-day practical overview of elements of genomic sequencing using the Illumina platform, using pre-analysed data from pre-distributed EQA panels from each participating laboratory; (2) to focus on developing participants’ understanding of bioinformatics and genetic sequence data processing and variant analysis including phylogenetic placement, aligned reporting and genome accessioning; (3) to increase Member States’ capacity to establish, maintain and strengthen their national genomic surveillance programmes in accordance with the Global Genomic Surveillance Strategy; and (4) to create regional and national pools of qualified technical resource persons and mentors for provision of training, mentoring, expert advice, and support in the area of genomic sequencing, GSD analysis and reporting in their countries and across the European Region.
