Malta as a valuable model for enhancing the autonomy and effectiveness of municipal councils in North Macedonia

The visit comprises meetings with the Association of Local Councils, representatives of regional councils, mayors, and the Parliamentary Secretariat for Local Government of Malta. During this visit, local decision-makers from both countries engaged in discussions on various topics, including citizen participation in decision-making, participatory budgeting, promoting transparency and accountability in local governance, fostering digital transformation in municipalities, encouraging inter-municipal cooperation, and promoting gender equality. The study visit is organized as part of the programme "Empowering Municipal Councils" which is financially supported by the Swiss Government and the Ministry of Local Self-Government, and it is implemented by UNDP in cooperation with national and local partners.
