Gender-responsive budgeting is essential in creating gender responsive municipalities.
Local self-government units (LSGUs) have an important role in recognizing and addressing the different needs of women and men, and this should be the basis of all local policies, services and budgets.
UN Women North Macedonia supports the process of enhancing municipal capacities in this regard
During March and April 2022, UN Women continued with the series of capacity development workshops at local level on gender responsive budgeting for LSGUs.
More than 90 local administration representatives and newly elected municipal councillors gained basic knowledge and understanding on gender equality and gender responsive budgeting and strengthened their skills on developing evidence-based gender responsive local programmes and budgets through series of workshops.
Why is gender analysis important? What does it show? How can the municipal administration use it in developing their local programmes and budgets? These were among the topics covered during the three-day workshops. In addition, these workshops are an opportunity of local governments to network and to discuss on the methods for advancing gender equality through collaborative initiatives between the administration and the council.
As a result of the capacity development, municipal administration strengthen their knowledge on how gender-responsive budgeting can be applied in the local policy making and budgeting processes.
This capacity development activity is implemented by the UN Women project “Promoting Gender Responsive Policies and Budgets: Towards Transparent, Inclusive and Accountable Governance in the Republic of North Macedonia” is funded by Switzerland and Sweden.
