Empowering Municipal Councils

The overall goal of the project is to further strengthen local self-governments through empowered municipal councils that are capable to effectively fulfil their assigned roles of representation, oversight and enacting municipal legislation with active citizen involvement. The project will be implemented in the period April 2022 – March 2027. The total project budget is USD 6,666,670 co-financed by the Swiss Agency for Development and Coordination, the Ministry of local self-government, UNDP and 40 partner municipalities.

The closing event for the first phase of the project took place on March 24 in Skopje. Stronger and more independent municipal councils, innovative technologies for greater transparency and accountability of the municipalities as well as increased participation of the citizens in the decision-making process at local level were emphasized as a key results and achievements of the project by the stakeholders and the beneficiaries who participated at the conference.
